The Design Process
Stage 1
Step 1
Site Survey & Assessment
Once you’re ready to proceed, I’ll visit your garden to conduct a site survey* This includes taking measurements, assessing levels, documenting existing features (plants, structures, boundaries), and understanding site conditions like drainage, sunlight, and soil type.
When you may need a professional survey:
For most residential gardens, my basic survey provides everything needed for your design. However, for more complex sites, I strongly recommend a professional surveyor to ensure accuracy and compliance. This includes gardens with:
Significant level changes or steep slopes requiring detailed topographical analysis
Properties in conservation areas
Protected or veteran trees (TPO - Tree Preservation Orders)
Planning permission requirements
Boundary disputes or unclear property lines
If a professional survey is needed, I can recommend surveyors for you to contact. Survey costs are arranged and paid for separately.

Step 2
Concept Design
This is where the creative magic happens! Based on our consultation, your requirements, and site survey, I’ll develop:
Mood boards showing the style, materials, and planting palette
Sketch plan with layout ideas and written explanations of the design concept 3D renders to help you visualize how your new garden will look
You’ll receive one full round of revisions at this stage, so we can refine the design together until it’s exactly what you’re looking for. Once you’re happy and the design is signed oW, we move to Stage 2.

The Design Process
Planning a new garden can feel like a big step, especially if you’re not sure where to begin. That’s exactly where I come in. I bring fresh creative ideas, practical solutions, and the expertise to help you avoid common pitfalls while making the most of your budget. I’ll handle all the planning, problem-solving, and technical drawings, so you can relax and enjoy watching your garden come to life. Here’s what I can provide for you:
Initial Consultation
We’ll start with a relaxed, no-obligation chat about your garden. This can be over the phone, via video call, or in person at your property. We’ll discuss:
Your vision and how you want to use the space
Your style preferences and any must-have features
Practical considerations like budget, timeline, and maintenance
Any challenges or concerns about your garden
After our conversation, I’ll provide you with a detailed quote based on your garden size and project complexity.

Step 2
Detailed Design
Now we get technical! I’ll create:
Scale drawings showing precise measurements and layouts
Material specifications detailing paving, edging, fencing, and hard landscaping elements
Construction details to guide your landscaper/builder
Any challenges or concerns about your garden
These drawings give you (and your chosen contractor) everything needed to bring the design to life accurately.

Handover & Support
Once your design is complete, I’ll walk you through all the drawings and plans, answer any questions, and provide guidance on finding contractors if needed. If you’ve opted for planting installation too, I’ll be on-site to bring your planting scheme to life.
